Mecklenburg County Teen Court

Program Established:

1995

Purpose of Program

Mecklenburg County Teen Court (MCTC), a program of Lift Up Carolinas, offers an alternative justice system for first-time juvenile offenders ages 12 to 17. This peer-led program gives youth the opportunity to accept responsibility for their offenses while emphasizing accountability, personal growth, and civic engagement.

How We Help

Peer-Led Court System
Teen Court provides a unique forum where youth offenders are judged by a jury of their peers. Teen volunteers serve as jurors, clerks, bailiffs, jury foremen, and attorneys. Juvenile offenders who complete their sentences, which include community service and jury duty, emerge with a renewed sense of responsibility.

Volunteer Development & Leadership
Volunteers receive training in courtroom roles, civil procedures, and advocacy. Many juvenile offenders return to serve as volunteers, gaining valuable leadership experience. Teen attorneys and jurors are given trainings that refine their courtroom skills.

How It Works
Youth are referred by school resource officers, law enforcement, and the Department of Juvenile Justice. After an intake interview confirms the juvenile accepts responsibility, they are scheduled for a Teen Court session, held twice monthly at the Mecklenburg County Courthouse. Volunteer teen attorneys represent the case before a judge and peer jury. The sentence is designed to be constructive and educational. A Program Administrator monitors sentence completion.

Consistently Low Recidivism
Teen Court’s recidivism rate remains under 5%, highlighting its effectiveness in fostering real behavioral change and preventing future offenses.
