Check Hunger
Program Established:
1992
Purpose of Program
Check Hunger, a core Lift Up Carolinas initiative, provides food support to at-risk students in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS). By reducing weekend hunger and addressing food insecurity at school and home, the program supports student well-being, improves focus in the classroom, and contributes to academic success.

How We Help
Weekend Backpacks
Each week during the school year—and for six weeks in the summer—600 students receive backpacks filled with full-size portions of protein, vegetables, fruit, and dairy. These meals support the student and their family through the weekend.
Mobile Pantries
In 2024–2025, Check Hunger will host 16 mobile food pantries at four high-need schools. Families drive through to receive 40–50 pounds of groceries including fresh produce, canned goods, bread, meat, and eggs. Up to 200 families are served at each event.
Metro School Snacks
Metro School, which serves 250 students with special needs, receives snacks and jars of applesauce to support medication schedules. Snacks are also provided during Special Olympics games.
Protein Donations
Lift Up Carolinas funds the purchase of high-protein items—like chicken, ground beef, and turkey—for distribution through Second Harvest Food Bank and NourishUp (formerly Loaves and Fishes).
Heart of the Home
Families moving into permanent housing through Habitat for Humanity receive small kitchen appliances, food staples, and other essentials to help them settle into their new homes.
